The Right to Information (RTI) Act, 2005 empowers every citizen to seek information from public authorities, thereby promoting transparency and accountability in governance. Educational institutions recognized or funded by the government are covered under Section 4(1)(b) and Section 2(h) of the RTI Act and must provide information unless exempt under Section 8.

As per the University Grants Commission (UGC) directives, all universities and colleges must appoint a Central Public Information Officer (CPIO) to handle RTI queries and applications.
